Monday 7/24/1941 Dickey (DET) and Williams (BRO) win P.O.W. award Bill Dickey wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .476 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.238 in 21 at bats. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Brooklyn's leftfielder Ted Williams. Ted was on fire, hitting .524 with 4 HR and 7 RBI.
Monday 7/17/1941 Player of the Week honors go to Foxx and Walker It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Washington's first baseman Jimmie Foxx. He had an on base percentage of .696 and hit .611, while driving in 7 runs. While compiling an on base percentage of .483, Jimmie hit .342 and slugged .680. He has collected 78 runs batted in this year. He's 5th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s centerfielder Dixie Walker. Walker helped his team with an average of .375 and 4 RBI in 16 at bats. Sunday 7/16/1941 Joe Gordon hits for the cycle against Boston (A) WASHINGTON - Joe Gordon led Washington to a 12-11 win over Boston (A) by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A pitch from Ira Hutchinson in the 1st inning left his bat for a triple. His 2nd hit, off Ira Hutchinson in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. His 3rd hit was a double off Tom Seats in the 7th inning. A single in the 9th off Jack Knott accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Joe did drive in 2 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 87 hits this season, accounting for a .264 batting average. He becomes the 2nd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 5/14/1941, Pepper Martin was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Friday 7/14/1941 Johnny Podgajny (STA) will miss 4 weeks ST. LOUIS (A) - St. Louis (A)'s ace Johnny Podgajny suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 4 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Detroit he experienced pain in his thrwowing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Podgajny was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. Opposing players hit .279 against Johnny this season. Monday 7/10/1941 Boston (N)'s Tabor wins Player of the Week award Cleveland's shortstop Lou Boudreau had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 29 at bats he hit .483 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s first baseman George Mcquinn. Mcquinn helped his team with an average of .571 and 9 RBI in 21 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .426, George hit .330 and slugged .511. He has collected 64 runs batted in this year.
Saturday 7/1/1941 Bill Dietrich out for 5-6 weeks CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Bill Dietrich suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Washington he experienced pain in his thrwowing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 3 starts this year Bill struck out 5 batters in 22.2 innings of work. Saturday 7/1/1941 Pitcher of the Month award winners announced The best month of June in the American League certainly had Detroit's right-hander Bucky Walters, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. Thursday 6/29/1941 George Mcquinn collects five hits against New York (N) NEW YORK (N) - On Thursday, Philadelphia (N)'s first baseman George Mcquinn displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against New York (N), punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 2nd hit, off Murry Dickson in the 2nd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Thursday 6/29/1941 Philadelphia (N)'s Joe Dimaggio unloads three times NEW YORK (N) - Joe Dimaggio can hit'em a long way, and New York (N) pitchers couldn't smile about that today. Philadelphia (N)'s rightfielder unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Murry Dickson in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from Murry Dickson in the 2nd inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 284 feet from home plate in left field. Number 3 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated 486 at feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Overall he went 5 for 6, scoring FOUR runs and collecting 8 RBI. Saturday 6/24/1941 Boston (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Dick Errickson BOSTON (N) - With his best stuff going, Chicago (N)'s Dick Errickson overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Boston (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Errickson (6-7) struck out none and walked 3, throwing 53 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Mickey Vernon helped Errickson at the plate, he went 1 for 3, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 2-0.

Friday 6/16/1941 Philadelphia (N)'s George Mcquinn has great day with five hits PHILADELPHIA (N) - George Mcquinn saw the ball really well, leading Philadelphia (N) to a 21-9 win over St. Louis (N). His five hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and George seemed happy as well after the game. A RBI triple off Vallie Eaves in the 1st inning, accounted for his 1st hit. His 4th hit, off Nick Strincevich in the 4th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Number 5 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated 413 at feet, cleared the wall in right-center. He had singles in the 2nd inning (one RBI) and in the 3rd (one RBI). Thursday 6/15/1941 Bucky Walters NO-HITS Boston (A) DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Bucky Walters is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Boston (A) on no hits. Walters (9-5) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 92 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today. That's a dream coming true for me!' The hitting star for Detroit was third baseman Pete Reiser, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. Detroit scored 3 runs on 7 hits.
Tuesday 6/13/1941 Boston (A)'s Gumbert out for 5-6 weeks BOSTON (A) - Boston (A) is without its right-hander Harry Gumbert for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Lyn Lary in a game against Detroit. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .239 against Harry this season. After being taken to a local hospital, Harris was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Sunday 6/4/1941 Bob Carpenter out for full season CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s ace Bob Carpenter experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against Detroit, Carpenter complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a near by hospital. The message shocked team mates and team officials. In 10 starts this year Bob struck out 53 batters in 75 innings of work. His ERA is 3.00, his record 4-5. Bob has pitched one shutout and 6 complete games.
Thursday 6/1/1941 Spud Chandler out for 4 weeks NEW YORK (N) - New York (N) is without its right-hander Spud Chandler for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Rollie Hemsley in a game against Chicago (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Chandler compiled an ERA of 5.58, going 5-3 in 10 starts. Sunday 5/14/1941 Boston (N)'s Pepper Martin hits for the cycle CINCINNATI - Pepper Martin hits 'em where they ain't. Cincinnati certainly agrees as Boston (N)'s rightfielder unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a double. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Mickey Harris. A single in the 8th off Woody Rich accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia (A) where he left the field in the 4th inning. Beck was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Beck compiled an ERA of 3.35, going 1-3 in 6 starts. He fanned 13 while giving up 47 hits in 43 innings.
